As one social phenomenon, collective behavior of social groups was firstly concerned and researched by social psychology. However, with the developments of media technology and the rising of network society, the continuous extension of the internet space is offering one new living space for the traditional collective behavior, and then the online collective behavior is borne which is the media extension of the traditional collective behavior. The "online collective behavior " is abundant of internet users' gathering that has no organization but specific current themes and characterized by the enhanced opinions in the stimulation of certain triggers. So, online collective behavior is a collective action in the context of information dissemination, at the same time, it is an action of the expressive of opinions and a "fighting words" in essence as the spiritual core. This paper is divided into five parts. The first part is an introduction about the research origins, the current status and perspectives, research ideas and other issues. In the second part, the author interpreted the concept of collective behavior and online collective behavior, and analyzed the relationship between them. It suggests that, in a certain extent, online collective behavior is an media extension of collective behavior, but as a new form of group behaviors, it has a lots differences in the occurrence field, subjective structure, sizes and demanded subjects. The author also divided the main types of online collective behavior and identified the nature of this group action. In the third part this paper analysis this complex phenomenon from the perspective of group communication, attempting to reveal character traits, growth mechanism, operation rules and the inflectional factors of this phenomenon. It not only implies inner characters such as chance and necessity, dispersion and aggregation, public and pluralistic, heterogeneous and homogeneous, but also the general rules within nonlinear generation process intertwined with the complex structure. From the inflectional factors, collective behavior is the result of multiple factors, this paper preliminary reveals the several important elements such as the inner and external environment, the restructuring of communication, the germination of psychological and the game of public opinion. In the fourth part the author clarified a few debate issues, and tried to re-think and review them. Collective behavior does not have the differences between truth or false, but by the "noise" the voice passing from online collective behavior has them; it has gone beyond our original rigid stereotypes for smells, movement, sensibility, etc. It is hard to find a "legitimate" and "center" because the diversity. The "discourse of equal rights movement" lunched by online collective behavior must digest the mainstream culture and elite culture which living in the orthodox, central position. And those sub-culture, popular culture which walking on the edge will be re-valued and recognized and obtain a reasonable structure. There is never boundary between "public" and "private" for the philosophers and political scientists. The most typical problem is counterbalance between "public domain" and "Private", "majority" and "minority" which is reflected in online collective behavior. On the basis of the current dilemma, the fifth part is trying to provide corresponding suggestions. As a spontaneous group action, online collective behavior can easily slide into "loss" of errors. It is trying to resolve these problems that how to avoid these irregular behaviors in a rational perspective. It is analyzed from three levels of the media, system and psychology in this chapter.
