In recent years, with the rapid development of Satellite Remote Sensing technology, the increment of the quantity of remote sensing data has brought great pressure to both storage and transmission, to obtain real-time remote sensing images with limited transmission channel capacity has become harder and harder. These problems can't be solved only by increasing the storage capacity and transmission capacity, so images must be compressed. To search for an efficient algorithm suitable for remote sensing image compression and make it suitable for hardware implementation has a very important practical significance. The zero-tree coding algorithm based on wavelet transform is a kind of good compression method. Firstly, this thesis studies this kind of algorithm and completes the whole design. Secondly, the thesis analyses the theory of wavelet transform and knows it is not easy to lossless compression and hardware implementation, so the lifting wavelet is taken to improve the design, which is less complex and easier to hardware implementation. Thirdly this thesis completes the lifting wavelet transform module, using FPGA's top-down design, and simulation result shows that this design can get a fast implementation. Finally, the SPIHT coding algorithm based on the structure of space tree is studied. Although this algorithm can effectively achieve data compression, it is not suitable for hardware implementation since it uses linked-lists structure, according to this shortcoming, Listless SPIHT algorithm is proposed. This algorithm can improve the result of compression and it is easy to hardware implementation. Eventually, the whole system is programmed under the platform of ISE software, using Verilog HDL, the system can obtain a faster processing speed and meet the needs of real-time.
