Routing protocol is one of the hot spot in current mobile wireless ad hoc network (MANET) research. The network node of MANET moves frequently and its topology may change at anytime, which brings huge challenges for the design of routing protocol for MANET. Mobile Agent is new-type distribution computing technology, and using the intelligence and the distribute character of mobile agent to solve the routing problems is one of research directions in MANET. Mobile agent based routing protocol for MANET is the main research content of this thesis.The thesis overviewed and analyzed the MANET and Mobile Agent technology at first, then proposed a mobile agent based routing protocol MARP (Mobile Agent Based Routing Protocol) for MANET. There are basically two types of mobile Agents in MARP, the one of which is route discovery agent (RDAgent), the other of which is route maintenance agent (RMAgent). RDAgent will update the routing tables of all the nodes it reaches while discovering appropriate routes. RMAgent will migrate to all nodes in the network and maintain the discovered routes. Due to the good flexibility of mobile Agents, simulation results show that MARP has better performance than DSR and it is feasible and advantageous to use mobile agent for MANET routing protocol.ZRP (Zone Routing Protocol) is a hybrid routing protocol, which improves the adaptation to nodes' high speed to a certain extent by combining the characters of proactive routing protocols and reactive routing protocols, but it is still less than ideal. So, the thesis put forward an improved routing protocol MAL-ZRP (Mobile Agent and Location information based ZRP) on the basis of ZRP routing protocol. MAL-ZRP continued the framework of ZRP. The Mobile Agents in MAL-ZRP move from node to node in a certain way in the network to get the location information and energy information of mobile nodes in MANET. By comparison the simulation result of ZRP and MAL-ZRP, MAL-ZRP is proved to be more efficient in reducing the routing overhead and the average end-to-end delay, improving the packet delivery ratio and balancing energy consumption of nodes.
