There is growing interest in millimeter-wave and submillimeter-wave band electronics for various applications including communications, radar, and spectroscopic observation. Millimeter-wave and submillimeter-wave sources are essential instruments for developing almost all millimeter-wave and submillimeter-wave systems. To generate high efficiency, high output power, broad band, low noise, tunable and compact millimeter and submillimeter wave sources, frequency multiplication is a very effective way to realize it now. During the past ten years, a lot of millimeter-wave and submillimeter-wave frequency multipliers are reported.In this thesis, the historical development and future trend of millimeter-wave and submillimeter-wave multiplier are introduced. Meanwhile, the conceptions of several kinds of multipliers are given. The theory of harmonic balance method, balance frequency multiplier by two anti-parallel connection diodes and NLTL(Nonlinear Transmission Line) frequency multiplier are discussed in detail. Based on these theories, a 360GHz balance frequency tripler, a 360GHz frequency tripler using single diode with two kinds of structure and nonlinear transmission line frequency tripler in Ka-band are designed.Until now, few research achievements on submillimeter multiplier source are reported in China. 360GHz frequency tripler including waveguide-to-microstrip transition, low pass filter, match circuits, band pass filter and microstrip-to-waveguide transition are designed in detail. According to the simulation results, both of 360GHz balance frequency tripler and 360GHz frequency tripler using single diode have their own advantages and disadvantages. 360GHz balance frequency tripler has better harmonic suppression, and the other has higher efficiency. So we should consider choosing the way to design it according to a variety of factors.A NLTL frequency tripler in Ka-band are designed by loading eleven varactors in a high impedance microstrip line in the thesis. The disadvantage of this tripler is using too many diodes, which is not good for miniaturization. But its high efficiency and wide band character can cover the shortage.
