Available control systems for seed coaters in China are too simple, highly restraining the improvement of seed coating quality. With the combination of the National Key Technologies Research and Development Program of China during the Tenth-five Year Plan, the objective of this research is to design an automatic control system for the new-style 5B-5 type seed coater in order to improve seed coating quality and meet the high requirements of seed during modem agriculture production.Based on the introduction of the present situation of seed coating technology advancement and the background of this research, the technological flow of seed coating was analyzed and researched. The automatic control system was designed with the control core of PLC, man-machine conversation interface of LCD touch screen, and incorporated some technologies of software, frequency conversion and transducing. The paper focused on type-selection design of the system hardware, software design of system monitoring and system controlling, the research of main problems in engineering techniques about the coater, as well as the result analysis for the coater's performance testing. This research solved some problems such as the over-simpleness of current seed coaters' control systems, poor quality of seed coating, and ensured the fault protection for key components, accurate measurement for seeds and chemicals, automatic control of the operation, safe and humanized operation.Performance testing results on wheat seeds coating showed that the machine can run steadily, the qualified rate of seed coating reached to 99.2%, and the other indices reached or exceed those in the national standard, the performance of the whole machine is on top among domestic counterparts.
