Augmented reality (AR)is a new human-computer interaction(HCI) technology, It is a achievement of multidisciplinary integration. Since 1990, researches of AR prototypes have made great progress. These researches focus on get information of special location in real environment and improve HCI based AR theory. Realistic visual effect of virtual object which appear in video frame wasn't a focal point. Its restrict AR technology using in applications. In order to achieve realistic merging effects between real and virtual, following researches have been made based on programmable graphics hardware and graphics algorithm .1. According to the research of AR prototype and analysis of effective factors that influence realistic rendering, we conclude that the key point to achieve realistic rendering in AR is to improve texture mapping method and lighting method when render virtual objects. We analyse the difference between traditional render pipeline and programmable pipeline.2. Based on illumination models of real time rendering , we select some models that fit the AR applications, and implement Phong model. We analyse the feasibility of using BRDF in AR environment for purpose of more realistic texture.3. In order to promote display effect, we analysed some texture technology that it influence realistic rendering directly. Considering the feature of AR system that syncretize the video streaming and virtual objects, we are improvement and achievement some texture method using shader. We make experiement for test and verify validity of algorithms in application area.4. The implementation of AR realistic rendering system based on programmable GPU is depicted from the following three aspects: the hardware architecture, overall process and developing platform. Experiment is given to illustrate the detail process. Fine results show that our algorithm is feasible and effective.
