With the development of network, next generation network will replace the traditional network has become a trend. IPv6, one of the key technologies, as next-generation networks, will lead the network's development. The advantages of IPv6 lies in its huge address space, hierarchical address structure, high-speed routing, Qos, security and mobility have a better support. Enterprise-class applications, such as the campus's network, there are large number of user groups and business applications. But the small IPv4 address space, security and management issues have become the bottleneck of network development. Centralized router is in dominant position of enterprise application. To deploy network based on IPv6, it is important to implement high-performance IPv6 centralized router. Forwarding system is the core module in the whole IPv6 router. It is engaged in packet forwarding and implementation of IPv6 core protocols in network layer. This article based on the "forwarding system for IPv6 centralized router" project. Firstly we research the basic principles and system structure of router, and the detail of how to implement IPv6 core protocol. We analyze the performance bottlenecks of centralized router, which are looking up route information and data forwarding. To get better performance, we propose a fast-forwarding mechanism to increase the speed of packet in this project, which takes the idea of"once route, multi-forwarding". According to performance analyses and test, the forwarding system can process IPv6 packets in high speed efficiently and stably, which can meet the basic requirement. We also introduces the background of IPv6 and current status of IPv6 router development , as well as requirement protocol of forwarding system, such as IPv6, ICMPv6, Neighbor Discovery, Path MTU Discovery and Stateless Address Auto-configuration.
