The need for a new Internet Protocol is well understood and accepted in the network industry. Requirements for more address space, simpler IP packet handling, better QoS support and greater security all lead to the development of Internet Protocol version 6(IPv6). To deploy network based on IPv6, it is important to implement high-performance IPv6 router. Forwarding system is the core module in the whole IPv6 router. It is engaged in packet forwarding and implementation of IPv6 core protocols in network layer.The thesis firstly introduces the background of IPv6 and requirement of forwarding system, as well as current status of IPv6 router development. Forwarding system is designed and implemented in High-Performacne IPv6 Router, including single-processor platform, distributed IPv6 router and IPv6 core router. The protocols of IPv6, ICMPv6, Neighbor Discovery, Path MTU Discovery and Stateless Address Autoconfiguration are carried out. Also the design and implementation of forwarding-system in distributed IPv6 router is presented, including distributed packets forwarding, buffer management for inter-node packets passing, control message communication for protocols and configuration data. The whole forwarding-system software is applied in IPv6 core router and interface for hardware platform is designed. Good results are also derived from protocol conformance testing for IPv6 core protocols.Packet classification is important for packet filtering and scheduling in routers. In this thesis, packet classification algorithms on multiple fields are surveyed. The algorithms metric and current research status are presented. The basic ideas and various algorithms based on them are illustrated. In the end, the applying of algorithms on IPv6 is analyzed.
