| Scientific News,a magazine, which was published in the perid of the 1898 Reform Movement with the purpose of enlightening chinese people as to their popular science. The magazine started publication on March 13,1898, and stopped in August of 1898, 16 issues of the magazine had been published in all. The magazine which lasted for a short time did't have great influence in history, but it has remarkable value for us.I try to search some important information about Wu-xu Enlightenment by studing the magazine Scientific News.My dissertation makes a study on the relationship between Scientific News and Wu-xu Enlightment. By studying the magazine,we can learn lots of information about the chinese people'popular science in the perid of the 1898 Reform Movement. The agony column of this newspaper has great value for us, because we can learn what the underclass intellectuals had learn on the popular science, and what they were thinking about. The main research methods in my dissertation includ newspaper study, history of science, history of Chinese polity thoughts, psychohistory.This article is divided into six parts:The first part mainly describe the relationship between the enlightenment of 1895-1898 and the newspaper that published during the time.The second part mainly introduces the purpose, the authors, the column, the operating conditions of Scientific News.The third part present Scientific News had made a great contribution to chinese people'scientific enlightment.The forth part present what the underclass intellectuals were thinking about how to revitalize china.In the fifth part, By studing the agony column of this newspaper, we can learn lots of secrets about underclass intellectuals in that perid.In the last part ,the article concludes the success and failure about the Wu-xu Enlightenment by studying Scientific News.The main innovations in my dissertation includ three aspects: First, I try to sort out the main information of Scientific News in order to benefit other person who want to use this magazine in a future time.Second,the sudy on chinese peple'popular science in the perid of 1895-1898 is a weak point in historical research. Scientific News will be a breakthrough point for this field. in the perid of 1895-1898,many scientific magazine like Scientific News were published. In my opinion,it is in the perid of Wu-xu(1895-1898) that chinese intellectuals began to enlighten chinese peple'popular science independently, which has a significance in modern chinese history.Third, in a long perid, we pay so much attention on the elites of the 1898 Reform Movement such as Kang you-wei,Liang qi-chao and Yan fu that we neglect the enormous underclass intellectuals in that perid. By studing the agony column of this newspaper, we can learn lots of secrets of underclass intellectuals in that perid.in that perid, the Scientific Literacy of underclass intellectuals had been improved and their thoughts and practise are more rational than before, they were the new intellectuals who had been changing from tradition to mordenity. |
