The blocking artifacts which block-based coding technologies bring on deteriorate the video subjective visual quality. The mobile video coding standard AVS1-P7 is the seventh part of AVS series standards and the fully intellectual property of AVS is owned by China. Loop filter is used in AVS1-P7 to reduce blocking artifacts. When reducing blocking artifacts, loop filter brings a lot of computation. AVS1-P7 is a standard for mobile application and the processing ability of the processor of the mobile device is limited. It is an important problem that how to accelerate the filtering process. It is an effective method that designing a special hardware accelerator for filtering to accelerate the filtering process and decoding process. In this paper, the loop filter for the mobile video coding standard AVS1-P7, the fully intellectual property of which is owned by China, is researched and designed. In this paper, the key technologies in AVS1-P7 and the algorithm of loop filter are introduced and analyzed. Based on above, the loop filter is designed. In the design, SRAM is used in the loop filter and the use of system data bus is reduced by the use of SRAM. It is useful for the implementation of real-time decoding. In order to read and write the data on each side of the filtering boundary (vertical or horizontal boundary) at the same time, the SRAM is divided into two parts by the strategy of storage separation and the position in SRAM of the data needing filtering is arranged, by doing which the data on each side of the filtering boundary (vertical or horizontal boundary) could be accessed at the same time and the filtering process is accelerated and the decoding process can be accelerated. The design is described by Verilog Hardware Describe Language and simulated in Model Sim. The simulation shows that the design is correct.
