Software size estimation is the basis of the software estimation process. Now the widespread use of object-oriented methodologies in software development and UML models throughout the lifecycle of the object-oriented project development and the disadvantages of the traditional software size estimation and the object-oriented software size estimation in existence have motivated the investigation of the object oriented software size estimation based on UML models. This thesis proposes object-oriented software size estimation process model and the applied methods, through the study of the use case model, use case point method based on use case model, the domain model, class point method based on domain model. In the process the object-oriented software size estimation can be completed as early as possible and the use case point method, class point method and the improved use case point method can verify each other, which improves the exactness of the object-oriented software size estimation. This thesis designs and implements the supported tool based on UML models by the process and methods above. The supported tool is transparent to the CASE tools and adopts use case point method; class point method and improved use case point method and can estimate the object-oriented software size automatically and correctly.Several examples in which the object-oriented software size estimation process and methods based on UML models are introduced are analyzed and discussed to verify the practicability of the process and methods. The purpose of this thesis is to improve the size estimation capability of software development group by using the UML models, and provide the well foundation for schedule and cost estimation, provide the guarantee for software quality assurance.
