ITU-T H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10AVC (H.264 for short) is the newest Internal Video Coding Standard, which was put forward by the Joint Video Team (JVT). And the JVT is formed by the MPEG (Moving picture Experts Group) of ISO/IEC and VCEG (Video Coding Experts Group) of ITU-T. It includes many advanced video compression coding methods in H.264 standard, which make this standard much better than the former one. The coding efficiency of H.264 can be one time faster than that of H.263 under the same visual perception, and it has better network friendliness. The application of H.264 is so wide that it can meet the needs of video application at different speeds and in various occasions, and it has high ability to deal with Error-Resilience and Loss Protection. Since the basic systems of H. 264 can adapt to the use of IP and network, it is important for the data transmission of multimedia information through internet or WAN information through mobile network. However, the computational complexity of the H.264/AVC encoder is dramatically increased because of its optimization technique which is about three times of H.263. Therefore it is necessary to optimize its algorithms for the implement in real time applications.This paper analyzes the H. 264 video coding international standards and explores the fast algorithm option in intra-frames or inter-frames coding of H.264. The basic methods of video compression coding, color space, sampling form and the development of digital video compression coding standards are introduced in the first section. By explaining the H.264 standard, its history, key techniques, prominent features, the improvement compared to that of H.261and H.263, and developing direction in the following chapters, the author put emphasis on the development of intra-frame coding under the standard of H.264, the predication analysis of intra-frame and the common methods for reducing the complexity of intra-frame predication in order to probe into the improvement on the fast algorithm option mode. Besides, a further study on the fast algorithm option in inter-frames coding through improvement of the extended fast motion vector mode upward are discussed in this paper.
