Visual sense is an important way for human to obtain external information, video information has features of intuition, certainty, efficiency, extensive and so on, but the data of video itself is huge which bring a lot of inconvenience for storage and transmission. In order to effectively compressed video information people formulate many video coding standards, and the H.264 as the new generation of video decoding standard formulated by International Telecommunication Union(ITU-T) and International Standard Organization(ISO) using the mature technology and pursuing higher coding efficiency and simplicity of expression meanwhile providing very good video quality and a good network characteristics, it is the most efficient video compression method currently, but it is too complicated to adaptive embedded video acquisition terminal and video applications computation ability limited, so how to optimize H.264 encoder and improve it's coding speed is an urgent problem to be solved.This paper mainly further research on one of the most time-consuming module of H.264 encoder——inter-frame block mode selection to look for a highly efficient inter-frame block mode selection algorithm to improve the encoding speed of encoder. We do lots of research for Inter-frame block mode selection and show different video sequences distribution of Inter-frame block mode selection under different QP, then we classify the videos according to the distribution pattern, find out the nature and characteristics of each video, summarize regularity of block mode selection, combined with the principle of block mode selection process, through numerous experiments and research we propose a fast inter-frame block mode selection algorithm. Then we actualize the proposed algorithm on JM model, using optimized encoder with the proposed algorithm and the original encoder encode the same video under the same configure, compare the changes of encoding speed, video quality and bitrate before and after optimization. Finally we made a further discussion on inter-frame block mode selection, experiments show that adjacent blocks with the same block model accounts for a large percentage, if these relevance been used for block mode selection will greatly improve the encoder encoding speed, This paper analyzes the prospect and temporary difficulties using this correlation for block mode selection under RDO mode.Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can speed up encoder remarkably while incurring little, if any, loss in quality, it can't feel this kind of video quality loss from the visual sense. It's much more suitable for coding the first class video when encoding different properties video sequences. In practical applications such as video surveillance area and areas with lower bitrate requirements, it has a wide application prospect.
