As a hot research focus of computer application, 3-D Visualization technology is widely applied to many fields such as, entertainment, virtual reality, medicine, digital battlefield, and etc. This dizertation mainly talks about its application in an ACMI (Air Combat Maneuver Instrument) launched by a military institute. One of the initial parts of this system is the visualization of air combat maneuver environment, including both battle situation and geographic environment, serving for the command, dispatch and assessment of the maneuver.Based on the ACMI launched by a military institute, this thesis mainly researches into the application of 3-D Visualization technology in air combat maneuver. The purpose of this thesis is developing a 3-D Visualization System in air combat maneuver by improving existing calculation methods after a through research of terrain modeling theory and calculation methods.The undertaking of this thesis begins with the research of 3-D terrain models: DEM and TIN which introduces some ways of TIN modeling. Based on the research on traditional way of Delaunay TIN modeling, an improved modeling method is adopted. The original data are modeled according to Delaunay TIN theory respectively at first and those models are combined into a TIN model then. This method saves the time and advances the efficiency of modeling. By applying OpenGL to 3-D coordinate transfer, visibility verdict, texture mapping etc. a third dimension of the 3-D terrain is created. in order to solve the problem such as internal memory can not load all data of a vast 3-D terrain efficiently at one time, the writer takes a breadth-first searching Quadtree LOD method witch can accelerate terrain-data access. the last part of this thesis introduces the application of 3-D visualization technology to ACMI system and the initial modules-engineering of the 3-D visualization technology.The calculation improvement in 3-D visualization technology, especially in 3-D terrain visualization, accelerates the terrain's 3-D visualization and promotes the development of better 3-D visualization products. Its application in ACMI system definitely facilitates information and digitalization construction for PLA.
