With the development of the technologies of software and hardware of sensor node, the applied scopes of the wireless sensor networks are becoming wider and wider, and lots of new design of sensor nodes and new relevant protocols based on them are also presented. In order to help the researches to validate or analysis their research findings or theories efficiently and conveniently, and reduce the cost, it makes a big sense to design and develop a wireless sensor network simulation platform with high flexibility and scalability. In this paper, we present an extensible, component-oriented, concurrent discrete event driven wireless sensor network simulation platform: H-Sim. The components of the H-Sim system have high reusability and low coupling, it can solve the problems of having high coupling between modules and difficult to debug and use which exist in other simulation systems like NS-2. Meanwhile, H-Sim can do sensor node modeling at different granularities, and simulate the nodes which have different protocol stack and hardware structures, so it can build hybrid simulation scenario with heterogeneous sensor nodes and perform cross-level simulation. At the aspect of the controlling of the simulation process, H-Sim uses the Multi-Thread Concurrent Discrete Event Driven (MTCDED) simulation framework, so it can utilize the multi-core processors in an effective way and increase the throughput of the system. At the same time, it can process the events with the same timestamp concurrently, and simulate the interaction and conflict of events better, and increase the facticity of simulation. Furthermore, taking advantage of the flexible, opening and scalable component-oriented architecture design, the reusability of the system components is improved effectively; and this design can implement the loosely coupled of components, depress the difficulty of the use of the system. Developers can easily build the hybrid simulation scenarios which contain heterogeneous nodes and networks with different topologies.
