At present all of the practical network architectures are layered ones, in which the mainstream network architecture is TCP/IP. The original TCP/IP protocol suites were developed for narrow band based text data, without considering the security and QoS issues. Since the 1990's, the application of network hasn't only been limited in the transmission of text on network in traditional way, but also been extended to the broad band fields including audio and video and network security field. With the rapid development of Internet all over the world, the limitations and disadvantages of TCP/IP architecture appeared ceaselessly because of the reason in itself. In this case, in order to enhance the performance of network, the experts in network field have done a great deal of careful research work, including the following two aspects, the one is to improve the performance of TCP/IP architecture, which is too difficult to solve the problem in itself, and the other is to research new network architecture in view of the characteristic of the development of communication technology and the demand of network application, which is the ultimate approach to solve the problem in layered network architecture. In order to improve poor network service efficiency, which is mainly due to the redundant repetitive function between neighbouring layers and complicated hierarchical processes existing in the conventional layered network, by analyzing and classifying network services, a new layerless network architecture called the Service Unit based Network Architecture(SUNA) is presented in this dissertatin. The SUNA is a network architecture which is quite different from the current layered network architecture. It is easy to design and implement and has greater flexibility. The SUNA is also a modularized architecture and its modules are Service Units (SU), which are the least entities that can provide service but hide their inner details. The SUNA is simpler than layered architectures, because SU only provides services and does not receive any services in the SUNA.This dissertation illuminates the concept of SUNA in detail and analyzes the trait and advantage of SUNA, then presents the design of SUNA based software router on the basis of characteristic of the SUNA and the idea of software router. In the case of deep research on the mechanism of network interface in software router, the dissertation suggest a design proposal of network interface module in SUNA based software router, then design and implement the network receiving service unit and network sending service unit. The network interface module in SUNA based software router is totally different from the protocol programs in Linux kernel and is innovative. At last by building the testing network platform, we test the function and performance of the network interface module and the whole SUNA based software router. The test proves that SUNA based software router can receive and send packets correctly, and can classify and schedule the packets due to different priorities, and can manage the virtual circuit and also can forward packets. Further more, the network interface module has favorable performance.SUNA is a new architecture, so SUNA based software router is also a new software router, the research and application of which will bring a positive influence on the development of next generation network.
