Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) is the key technology in town planning. The vehicle volume detector has been changed from the single touched loop to mixed untouched methods. Microwave traffic detector (vehicle volume detecting radar) as one of the ITS vehicle volume detecting methods has the wide application foreground. In this paper, the vehicle volume detecting system which is based on LFMCW millimeter wave radar is presented and discussed.First, the target scatting performance of several types of geometries under microwave and the RCS (Radar Cross Section) of typical vehicles are roughly analyzed and project estimated, while the operational principle and other performances of the vehicle volume detecting radar system are introduced and established. And then the function of each component is discussed in detail. The frequency in which the radar works is set down to 35GH_Z, and more, this paper analyzes the performance specification of the radar system, calculates the radar system's errors, and accomplish the index distribution, indicating that the scheme demonstration and performance evaluation of the radar system are completed correctly.By analyzing the main components of the whole system, a type of application version of FIR digital band-pass filter for distinguishing four different roads is introduced and designed. Last, to meet with the high resolution request of the vehicle volume detecting radar, this paper analyzes the resolution of LFMCW wave form based on the ambiguous function and discusses a kind of mixed wave form design.
