Internet only provide Best Effort services, and can not provide Quality of Service(QoS) guarantees for streaming media transmission, so how to improve the support ofnetwork for streaming media transmission become a research hotspots in recent years. In this paper, we discuss how to provide better QoS guarantees for streaming mediatransmission in switch scheduling algorithm. Considering the streaming mediatransmission characteristic and its requirements for the network, based on MPEG-4scalable coding technology and the existing switch scheduling algorithms, this paperpresents a MPEG-4 streaming oriented switch scheduling algorithm. To improve the transmission quality of MPEG-4, our scheduling algorithm has thefollowing improvements:(1) Make different tags for MPEG-4 base layer packets and MPEG-4 enhancementlayer packets at the sending system, with different levels of priority;(2) Add classification queues at the input port of the switch, classify the MPEG-4packets when they reach the switch, and schedule them before they enter the Virtual OutputQueue (VOQ), using an improved Deficit Round-Robin algorithm;(3) When matching between input ports and output ports, we use an improvedprioritized iSLIP algorithm. The improved algorithm transmit MPEG-4 base layer packets,MPEG-4 enhancement layer packets and general data packets with different prioritytransmission policy, and ensure the MPEG-4 base layer packets, which are the mostimportant, can be transmitted first, in order to improve the transmission quality of MPEG-4stream.Simulation results show that the MPEG-4 oriented switch scheduling algorithmpresented in this paper can guarantee the delay performance of MPEG-4 base layer packets, improve the transmission quality of MPEG-4 stream, and the switch can support thetransmission of MPEG-4 stream better.
