The operation of adding cold charges is a pivotal operation in copper matte converting process. The cold charges incoming system influences the output and quality of copper directly. Traditional methods and strategies can hardly realize optimal operation because the converting process is a nonlinear system with complex mechanism, great lag and poor robustness. Moreover, current operating mode of adding cold charges which depends on observing melt temperature and personal operating experiences can't realize optimal operation. So an operational optimization model is designed, and an operational optimization direction system is exploited for directing the operation of adding cold charges.The mechanism and characteristic of copper matte converting process are introduced, and the actualities and existent problems of adding cold charges operation are analyzed. Based on the mechanism of copper matte converting process and experience of computing residual heat respectively, adopting system identification methods with abundant historical data accumulated in the industrial process, two models (i.e. heating balance model and experiential model) are built to compute residual heat. Then, according to the characteristic of the two models, using optimal combination algorithm, a new combinatorial forecasting model of residual heat is established.Based on the forecast value of residual heat, the global optimal combination (i.e. the kinds and the addition of cold charges in the whole converting process) is obtained by an improved genetic algorithm. Based on the global optimal combination, the mechanism and expert experience of converting process, a forward reasoning expert system is established to obtain the operational optimization instruction.Lastly, an operational optimization direction system is exploited, which guides the operation of adding cold charges, also implements the functions such as real-time condition monitoring and comprehensive management of complicated industrial data. Since the system runs in the copper matte converting process, average quantity of cool charges treated has increased by 9.98% and average output of copper has increased by 6.0%. The practical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the scheme.
