The passive location technique has been widely used in navigation, aviation,spaceflight and electronic warfare. As the passive location technique can simply ascertainthe location of the radiant point without transmitting any electromagnetic wave, it hassome characteristics such as broad locating area, better concealment, strong anti-jammingpower. As a result, the research of this technique has been paid more and more attention toin many countries.Three main passive location systems are discussed in this paper: time difference ofarrival location method(TDOA), frequency difference of arrival location method (FDOA)and joint location method. The elements and algorithm of them are discussed, and thetheory analysis and computer simulation are made. Each graph of location error issimulated with different station distribution, different TDOA/FDOA measurement error,and different station position measurement error. The problems about location accuracy,mistiness and non-result are analyzed so as to achieve an optimal station distribution. Thestudy in this paper provides an important theory foundation and some experiment data forthe designation and execution of passive location system. Therefore, the paper is valuablein both theory and practice.
