In both military and civilian fields, for instance, in air defense and in air traffic control,we all need tracking targets in a reliable and accurate mode. And along with the rapiddevelopment of the aerospace technology, all flight vehicles speed and maneuverability arehigher and higher. How to enhance the performance of tracking high speed and highlymaneuvering targets has become more and more important.The maneuvering target can worse the performance of the tracking systems, becauseof the complexity, the randomness and the multiplicity of maneuvering, it's a challengeableproblem to track maneuvering targets, which has both theoretically and practicallytechnical difficulties.At first, this paper introduces the development history and the research status of theproblem of tracking maneuvering targets, mostly introduces the interacting multiple model(IMM) algorithm. Chapter two introduces a few extensively used maneuvering modelsinclude constant velocity(CV) model, constant acceleration(CA) model, Singer model,"current" statistical model and two-stage filter model, and discusses every model's statefunction and parameters. In chapter three, we discus the algorithm of adaptive filter. Inchapter four this paper proposes two kinds of target tracking algorithm. And based on thetwo algorithms above, a new modified IMM algorithm is proposed, the simulation resultsindicate, this algorithm obtains a better performance in tracking targets. At last, wesummary this paper and prospect the future research directions and development trend.
