IP camera, new generation equipment for visual surveillance, which is the fruit of digitization and network of the visual surveillance technique, has caused a tremendous progress in the field of visual surveillance system. It is very popular to research IP camera for visual surveillance researchers. The emphasis of the research nowadays is how to design an IP camera with high performance and the advantage of easy to extend and update. This paper is about how to design an IP camera based on the multimedia equipment DM642. This paper consists of four parts which are listed as follow. The first part summarizes the analyses of the popular techniques in the visual surveillance field and the realizable schemes and common methods of designing an IP camera. The second part focus on the design of the hardware platform including minimum sub-system of DSPs, extended video collection module, video playback module and extended external storage module. The third part of this paper is about the program of the software system based on embedded real-time operating kernel. The program adopts the software reference framework named RF5, which is proposed by TI (Texas Instruments). This framework includes the driver programming, realization of each function module as well as the system integration. Meanwhile, the algorithms of image preprocessing are discussed and optimized based on the DM642 chip set in order to speed up the process. Finally, network communication and application of network based on NDK(Network Develop Kit) are discussed in more detail. In this paper, both the hardware platform and the software system of IP camera are accomplished. Furthermore, algorithm in the software system is improved so that it is easy to add new functions to this IP camera.
