Most multimedia applications, such as remote medical, videoeducation, video conference etc, have many data and timely requirement,which should be supported by multicast transport scheme. Thedissertation have analyzed elements ,merit and demerit both IP multicastand Application-Layer multicast. Some existing Application-Layermulticast mechanism still have big limitations, such as only adaptive tosparse mode, or small members scale.The dissertation chooset build a new multicast transport network atthe application-layer. It is based on IP network, and provides a transportfacility for multicast applications. The dissertation design this overlyanetwork as a general-purpose reliable multicast network, and it is calledGRMS(General Reliable Multicast System). And The dissertationimplement it as an infrastructure service. GRMS uses a hierarchicalstructure. There is an application-layer transport network in every localarea. Through this local overlay network, data will be sent to all thereceivers that are located in the local area. Every local network has agateway, by which it communicate with other local networks. By this way,any GRMS node can send data to all other nodes within the entirenetwork.GRMS's merit is it have gooder general-purpose, reliable,extensive.The key point when designing GRMS is how to build a distributiontree for a special multicast application. The dissertation introduce atwo-phase building tree policy. During the first phase, The dissertationconstruct a mesh from the underlying IP network. During the secondphase, The dissertation construct a distribution tree rooted at the sourcefor a special multicast data stream. For the more, The dissertation designthe reliability and security architecture of GRMS, give the solutions formesh splitting, node aborting, authority, integration and sourceauthentication.In practice, The dissertation implement a real GRMSmodel base on the socket programming interface, and introduce a realapplication in surgery training.Above all, GRMS is a general-purpose, reliable, extensive multicastnetwork.
