The research works in this dissertation are supported by the Corporate Building Project of Beijing Educational Committee (XK100130537), the National Nature Science Foundation (No.60578043, No.60577046 and No.603 77026) and the National 863 High Technology Important Project (No.2001AA122041).Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) has been one of the main obstacles for long-haul optical fiber communication systems with the speed beyond 10Gbit/s, and it has also been a hot topic in optical fiber communication fields at these years. Based on the theory foundation of polarization mode dispersion (PMD), the testing of polarization mode dispersion, polarization mode dispersion emulator and its statistic character, the adaptive polarization mode dispersion compensation and experiments etc are discussed respectively, and new modulation coding formats is preparatory studied.Above all, the research works in the dissertation are summarized as follows:The basic theory of polarization mode dispersion such as the description methods of polarization light, the origin of birefringence and polarization mode dispersion are introduced.The definition of polarization-mode-dispersion vector, the model of the principal states of polarization (PSP) and the concatenation rules and model of polarization-mode-dispersion vector are analyzed.PMD in telecommunication fibers is a stochastic or random process.
