Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) is a state-of-art technique in the field of wireless communication. Its simple framework bases on multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver. The basic principle of MIMO is to transmit parallel data streams by multiple antennas of the transmiter, then combine and process the different data streams received by multiple antennas of the receiver. Because the entire parallel data streams share the same bandwidth and transmit simultaneously, MIMO can enhance system capacity without additional bandwidth.UESTC is in charge of design and implementation of the B3G TDD downlink system in the National High Tech Development and Research Program "FuTURE Project". The data transfer rate of this system is designed upto 100Mbps, whose basic framework is OFDM and MIMO. The system utilizes FPGA to design, and MIMO detection becomes an important key part.This paper focuses on the research, design and FPGA implementation of MIMO detection algorithms. It contains simplifying the MIMO detection algorithm and mapping the algorithm for the desire of hardware implementation. After verification and optimization, the TDD downlink system has tested successfully in the MIMO wireless enviroment.In the topic of research and design, this paper simplifies the SIC MMSE detection algorithm and its sub-algorithm blocks in the case of iterative detection by analysising and deducing. The complexity and compution have been simplied and cut down by the works metioned above. This paper particularly dicusses the methods of matrix inversion compution in MIMO systems and try to find out the one, which is suitable to SIC MMSE detection in this case.In the topic of hardware implementation, this paper analyses and maps the complexity of algorithm by steps and characteristic, layouts the matrix inversion, matrix multiplication, exponential compution etc. Using IP cores provided by the third corp., this paper and its main practical work complete the FPGA design of MIMO and its iterative detection.This paper introduces the hardware platform for FPGA, according to the performance of algorithm and implementation desire. The design has been successfully brought to the Beyond 3G TDD mobile experimental system.
