Since the second half of the 19th century, Shanghai has become one of the modernist cities in China under the promotion of civilization and open-mindedness, and became a famous metropolis in the world in 1920~30s. As the result, the city appeared an unprecedented view with extremely prosperity. And the flourishing city offered the practical cause of the development of the vogue imagination of Shanghai urban culture.This article is clarified mainly by means of image-text canalization to observe the vogue imagination of Shanghai in 1920~30s based on the magazine"The Young Companion"which was popular at that time. And utilized the options to find out how the magazine impulse the bourgeois culture marketing and consumption, and how to up-build the imagination of the bourgeois culture. And further to observe the relationship of the vogue imagination of Shanghai urban culture and the civilized process of Shanghai civic life according to the consumptionism, which as the impetus of the modern urban culture.As witness and participant of modern Shanghai,"The Young Companion"not only lay out the showy and hardly life in Shanghai, but also provide us an imaginable vogue city in the gap between the virtual and true of the image-text relay on its pictorial characteristic. The magazine depended on its own mode of discourse to trace out the vogue expectation identified with the society, which provided an object for the burgher to imagine and imitate. The vogue imagination of"The Young Companion"not only show the simple phenomenon of culture and the sight of modern urban culture, but also reflect the culture trend of the course of modernization of China and the transformation of the societal value.
