It is generally considered that The Young Companion is the Chinese earliest large comprehensive pictorial, which is a combination of information, entertainment and knowledge, with rich pictures and articles as well as the varied content. The Young Companion is such precious visualized history materials that it has the vital significance and the reference value for researching into urban culture of Shanghai and Chinese society in the early 20th century.The paper focus on the"domestic period"(1926——1945) of The Young Companion, which has the most value to research into. By analyzing the form, content, idea, management mode and other aspects of The Young Companion, the purpose is to find out what roles it played in Chinese pictorial history. As a symbol of urban culture, The Young Companion reflects the various aspects of the urban life in Shanghai at that time, which advocates a new trend and guides a new lifestyle. So the paper also discuss its great impact on creating urban culture of Shanghai, which is beneficial to making better use of the visual communication to develop urban culture in contemporary society.
