Developing Spatial Light Modulator(SLM) as the representative of the dynamic components in the information optical are mostly concerned. Spatial Light Modulators play the role of input and output, dynamic linking and control, parallel computation, associative memory, etc. Most of SLM are TFT-LCD transmission SLM. As LCD's transmittance and contrast is very low, its application is limited. Digital Micro-mirror Device(DMD) is a new SLM device with the MEMS structure, that its reflectivity is large, have the obvious advantages in the field of reflective optical modulating. Designing a reflex SLM based on DMD is very important. This paper is study for design of reflective SLM.The first part of this paper introduces the status of studying in the SLM. It explains the principle of the TFT-LCD transmission SLM and the DMD reflex SLM. After compared the advantages and disadvantages of the two modulators, it decides to select DMD as the study of the SLM. It introduce a program of improved into reflective SLM using a DLP(Digital Light Processor) system, DMD is driven by the video processing units creating dynamic monochrome video signal indirect control.Secondly, paper describes the design of reflex SLM. It divides the overall system into control module and system DMD drive module in the part of hardware, and it is a detailed description of separate modules, components and interface technology. Software design explains the system process module, it introduces the principle and method of OSD drawing mode programming producing video signal. The design of PC software is based on the analysis for demand and goals .The third part of paper is about measuring of the reflex SLM. The measure target is spatial precision and time nicety of the DMD, it gives two measure methods, and analyses the measure data. It validates the system's control ability in space and time precision.Finally, the conclusion and future research direction are given.
