With the advancement of technology and informationization trend of our society, multimedia has gradually become an important information dissemination tool in our lives. In this thesis, we address the design and implementation of an EM8511 embedded platform and network based multimedia playing back control system. With regard to limited resource of the embedded platform and restricted network bandwidth, we proposed a strategy which combines network file downloading and local playing back techniques, to solve the playback quality instability problem that streaming media system encounters upon restricted network bandwidth and uncertain transmission delay. Furthermore, our research and implementation of the multiple file format compatibility mechanism, the multimedia document update and replacement strategy, the network topology discovery mechanism and the network time synchronization algorithm further completes the functionality of the system, test results show that the performance of the system meets application requirements, which lays down a solid base for commercial system deployment.
