The simulation on system level is of great importance in radar signal processing. Some traditional methods, such as simulation based on SPW(Signal Processing Workstation) and simulation based on advanced computer language, have their own problems. The former is hard to be applied in daily use because of its highly professional software and complicated stimulation procedure, while the latter is of a great amount of work, tedious debugging, and high rate of error, all of which result a too long developing cycle. In order to resolve these problems, a new rapid prototype design method based on RTW (Real-Time Workshop), combined with the OS of VxWorks, is used to implement the real-time simulation of radar signal processing. Making use of Matlab/Simulink, the system model could be built instantly to do un-real-time simulation on system level, while VxWorks is the most popular Real-Time OS applied in the Embedded field, which has excellent Real-Time character and dependability. Auto-generating C code for VxWork from the Simulink model using RTW makes the simulation on embedded platform much easier.On the basis of deep studying and research on the rapid prototype design method, RTW is firstly introduced in this paper, laying emphasis on the flow of realization for VxWorks real-time object. Secondly, the realization of Signal Processing System of a Pulse Doppler Radar is described in details. Give the principles for main modules (including Pulse Compression, FFT and CFAR). Establish the mathematics model. Build a simple PD Radar Signal Processing System through Simulink and realize the un-real-time simulation under the environment of Matlab. The result of simulation validates the correctness of the algorithm of the model. Finally, after some modifications on the original model of Simulink, the RTW generates programs for VxWorks from the Simulink model, that transforms the un-real-time simulation into real-time simulation. As a result, the feasibility of applying the rapid prototype design approach in the Radar Signal Real-Time Processing based on RTW is proved preliminarily.Comparing to the simulation based on SPW, using Simulink to build system is more visual and easier to realize.
