It is often required to quickly and precisely measure the angular displacement, so as to adjust or control the orientation and carriage of engineering objects in order to stabilize the objects within the required bound in the field of aviation, spaceflight shipping, nation defending and so on. The angular displacement measurement is a key factor in this kind of control system and the base of realizing other functions.According to the performance specifications of angular displacement measuring system, a tracing angular displacement measuring system is designed based on 8 bit microcontroller. The system can sample the absolute angular displacement between 0 to 360 degrees, which can display the results in one of the modes: angle, radian or mil and communicate to other computers by RS-232 serial communication ports. The design is based on modularized idea which has the advantage of simple structure, low cost, high reliability. The software of the system is fulfilled in C language so that it is easily extended and amended.The mathematical model of angular displacement measuring system is given in this paper on the base of analyzing conversion principium of the system and functional modules of shaft-digital converter. The system functions of both open loop and close loop indicate that the system is a second order one.Errors of the system are analyzed. Various factors which can cause the measurement errors are pointed out and mathematical expressions for these errors are deduced. In this way, a reliable basis was provided for reducing the measuring errors and improving the accuracy of angular displacement measuring system. And some ways which can restrain or compensate these errors are introduced. The debugging results indicate that the system can reliably be operated and meets the design requirements.
