In both military and civilian fields, for instance, in air defense and in air traffic control, we all need tracking targets in a reliable and accurate mode. The moving targets can worse the performance of the tracking systems, because of the complexity, the randomness and the multiplicity of maneuvering, it's a challengeable problem to track maneuvering targets, which has both theoretically and practically technical difficulties. And along with the rapid development of the aerospace technology, all flight vehicles'speed and maneuverability are higher and higher. Under this circumstance, how to enhance the performance of tracking high speed and highly maneuvering targets has become more and more important. Thus, it is urgent to research new tracking and filtering methods with better performance. Although there are many tracking algorithms, there isn't so much research on tracking high speed and highly maneuvering targets now. So this paper focuses on the problem that how to track high speed and highly maneuvering targets. At first, this paper introduces the development history and the research status of the problem of tracking maneuvering targets, mostly introduces the interacting multiple model (IMM) algorithm, its refinement algorithms and some maneuvering models. Chapter two introduces a few extensively used maneuvering models include constant velocity (CV) model, constant acceleration (CA) model, Singer model,"current"statistical model and two-stage filter model, and discusses every model's state function and parameters. Three tracking algorithms are discussed in chapter three: the IMM algorithm, the reweighed interacting multiple model (RIMM) algorithm and the interacting acceleration compensation (IAC) algorithm. Every algorithm's principle and steps are detailed introduced; we also do every algorithm's simulation includes the IMM algorithm which uses Singer model,"current"statistical model, two-stage filter model respectively, the RIMM algorithm and the IAC algorithm. In chapter four this paper proposes a kind of IMM algorithm which uses many kinds of models and does some simulations; a kind of IMM algorithm based on time-varying Markov transition probabilities matrix is introduced and simulated; based on the two algorithms above, a new modified IMM algorithm which merges many kinds of models and time-varying...
