As one of main communication modes, RS232 serial interface has been applied in many types of equipments, such as instruments, controllers and remote terminals, for long time. For these equipments could be used in the future, this status may not match with the popular USB (Universal Serial Bus) bus interface well. In this dissertation, an USB-RS232 commutator is designed and realized to solve this problem. By using this commutator, those traditional equipments can realize bidirectinal data transmition with USB bus interface through their existing RS232 interface.This dissertation focused on the topics as: the related knowledges of USB interface specification, hardware and software design of the USB-RS232 commutator, and its performance tests. The dissertation presents the following aspects:1. Introduction for the background of this task;2. Introduction for the USB interface specification related with this task;3. Detail of the hardware design of the USB-RS232 commutator;4. Detail of the software design of the Host and Slave;5. Installation and test results.From the performance tests, it is known that the design achieves the anticipated objectives. Those technique results and developing experiences, summarized from this USB-RS232 commutator design, are valuable benefits, such that could be helpful to develop some new instruments with USB interface in the future.
