As an essential part to guide the construction of joints in the steel structure, the detailed drawing of joint, especially the dimensions in those drawings, are very important to the quality and efficiency of the construction. The automatic dimension is one of the key functions provided by the PDSOFT SteelWorks. This paper is mainly concerned with the introduction to the research and development work of the automatic generations of various dimensions in the joint drawing. Following topics are covered in this paper:1. The zone division scheme is presented. By dividing the paper space into several zones as needed, all the dimensions could be distributed on the paper by preset rules. Under this method, the disordered layout could be improved. The joint drawing generated automatically is ordered, neat and standard;2. The algorithm for covering box retrieval is provided and implemented. By checking the graphics information of the joint parts, a rectangle contour could be found for each part, called covering box;3. The reason, classification, and negative influence of the interference among the joint parts are analyzed thoroughly, a whole set of deciding, different meanings elimination methods are provided. Moreover, the algorithm of define point algorithm is figured out;4. By using the sorting methods, a layout algorithm for dimensions within one zone is brought out and implemented. The interference among the dimensions are totally avoided.All the work mentioned above has been achieved as an integral part of the project PDSOFT SteelWorks.
