Sensor network, which is made by convergence of sensor, micro-electro-mechanism system and networks technologies, is a novel technology about acquiring and processing information. In this paper, the architecture and characteristics of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) are briefly introduced at first, and some valuable applications of WSN are explained and forecasted. Combining with the existing work, the layered protocol of WSN is summarized and explained in detail. The common modes of sensor querying and the "sensor hole", the sensor models are introduced in the case of locating and tracking possibly moving signal sources, analyzing the characteristic of state-dependency of WSN in the course of locating and tracking. Starting with the dominant idea of the information driven sensor selection, the concept of information utility is presented, and the methods of measuring the information utility are respectively introduced, the mutual information measure and Mahalanobis Distance measure. In this paper, the keystone of Information Driven Sensor Querying and Data Routing (IDSQ) is illuminated, and the IDSQ tracking algorithm is summarized, and it is presented that how to minimize communication cost, while maximizing information gain. By comparing with other algorithms, the advantage of maximizing information gain is explained. The information-driven sensor selection is simulated in this paper.As far as locating and tracking the target in WSN is concerned, it needs sensors collaborating. But for the characteristics of limited battery power and communication bandwidth, the sensor selection and the rational working sequence is very important to improve the efficiency of locating and tracking. In this paper, the research of information driven sensor selection is carried through. During the sensor selection, according to the information that could be given by the sensor, the next sensor would be selected, which would minimize communication cost, while maximizing information gain, improve the efficiency of locating and tracking.In this paper, it is simulated that the research of the different effect of...
