The Snmpv3 Design, Implementation, And Secure Network Management Platform

In recent years, communication networks and computer networks have been evolving fast, and bringing more convenience to people all over the world. At the same time, networks have larger and larger scale, and more and more complexity. Thus, the management and control to networks are one of the important aspects in network research and construction.Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), which is proposed by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), is a network management protocol based on TCP/IP protocol. Because it is simple and easy to apply, SNMP is very widely used, and has made itself actual International Standard of computer network management.While developing fast, early versions of SNMP have shown their shortcomings. One of the main defects of SNMP is lack of security mechanism. Nowadays network security is becoming more and more important, and the security of network management also can not be ignored. Setting up a new network management protocol which is secure enough but does not drastically affect the efficiency has become an immediate need. Therefore, Simple Network Management Protocol Version 3 (SMMPv3) comes into being.SNMPv3 is the newest version of SNMP. It enhanced a series of security and access control mechanisms based on previous version, to solve the security problem of SNMP, and defined an integrated architecture of SNMP. It fulfills the request of secure network management, and still keeps simple and easy to use.This thesis briefly explains the basic aspects of network management and the main management protocols firstly. Then the development and architecture of SNMP are introduced, and the security problems are discussed.Secondly, SNMPv3 is studied and analyzed. The architecture, message structure and protocol operations of SNMPv3 are introduced. With the analysis of security threats to network management, the new security mechanisms of SNMPv3 is explained, which includes authentication, privacy and access control.Then, an implementation of SNMPv3 agent on VxWorks OS is given.
