One of the most important events in the history of the development of TV technologies is the implementation of digital compression technology, which leads TV industry into a new rapidly developing stage. With satellite, cable and terrestrial transmission channels, DVB, of which the digital compression is the core technology, has such features as two-way channels, interactive functions, etc. In DVB system, the information of video, audio and text is digitalized and integrated to form a new kind of TV program. Furthermore, through online digital information broadcasting, people can browse information of other programs while watching several programs just as they have done on the internet. The client STB(Set-Top-Box), which is designed to receive the information at the terminal for the client, processes large amount of information in terminal, and provides customers with the convenient interface and simple operating method. As the services from TV providers become more and more complicated, the security requirements for TV broadcasting are rising to a higher level. It also requires that the client STB software to be able to process synchronized multiple signals and have the function to defend illegal attack. The functions of the software developed by former STB manufacturers are too simple to satisfy the increasing requirements. Therefore, auto-updating functions are needed for STB. Besides, the module to defend illegal attack should also be integrated in STB to ensure secure broadcasting. So it is a key point for the STB developers to develop effective system with high security and independent intellectual property according to national requirements in defending illegal attack.Based on the in-depth study of technologies of STB serial port updating and defending illegal attack, client software serial port updating and real-time defending solutions are proposed to for satellite STB, according to national standard. It has also referred to the development experience of similar products in the world. Besides, both the hardware and software features of satellite STB are considered. Both of these two solutions are based on the same hardware of satellite STB of STi5516 chip. One solution is implemented on the software platform of OS20 of STMicrotronics, while the other on MS Windows. In this dissertation, the implementation of two software modules in satellite STB is described in detail, including how to create new task in embedded system to auto-update the software, and how to monitor and control the satellite signal by software in both STB and PC. In the end, the simulation procedures such as building up the test environment and test process for the two modules are introduced. From the simulation result, the serial port updating module are working normally. The simulated signal of illegal attack is defended while the background monitoring works effectively.
