Great progress has been made in fiber communication technology these years. All-optical communication network, which is based on OPS (Optical Packet Switching), has been the objective of the future optical communication network. As the critical technology of OPS, optical buffers can reduce loss probability and enhance switching efficiency, especially while dealing with the problem of contention resolution.In current communicative system, all the optical buffers use fibers as memories. In this research, various optical buffers have been analyzed and compared, and a novel fiber loop buffer based on 2×2 SOA switch is also offered. Then a theoretic study about this buffer and analysis of its characteristics such as gain, ASE noise and SNR are carried out, and the influence of optical switch's extinction ratio on the buffer is also represented. On the basis of this study, comes the conclusion that tunable buffering time can be achieved by the buffer. Otherwise, the buffer practicability by illustrating their efficacy in solving the competing problem on OPS and OBS has been proved. There are some different efficiency between this buffer and other buffer configuration.At the end of this study, the design method of 2×2 SOA optical switch driver is described, and one with IC and separated elements is produced.
