VHDL is more popular used to design digital circuits and widely used in ASIC design, communication systems design and embedded systems design. Although digital circuits are more and more used in electronic systems, but it is nearly impossible that digital circuits instead of analog circuits in electronic systems design, so it is a disadvantage that VHDL is only used to design digital systems. Therefore, IEEE published IEEE VHDL STD 1076.1 to extend VHDL for analog and mixed-signal systems description and simulation. VHDL ,defined by VHDL STD 1076 and 1076.1, is called VHDL-AMS.New concept and features of VHDL-AMS are introduced in this article by analysis of IEEE VHDL 1076. 1, how to model analog circuits and mixed-signal systems and how to exchange information between analog parts and digital parts in a system is discussed in this article. A wireless remote-controlled system is design based on VHDL-AMS, and mixed-signal simulation results are presented. Wireless remote-control system is mixed-signal systems and includes communication system and control engineering area;finally, A parameterized PLL is design and simulated based on VHDL-AMS. As result, VHDL-AMS is more effective and more powerful to design electronic systems, not only for digital systems design but also for analog and mixed-signal systems because of its capacity of description of analog and mixed-signal system, and it will be widely used in multi-disciplines systems design such as mobile-electronics and control systems.
