It is an important subject in information scout, battlefield surveillance and automatic target recognition to detect interesting objects from complicated background. Polarization imaging has the ability to identify false targets and enhance images taken in poor visibility. The methods of obtaining polarimetric images, fusion of polarimetric images and removing the effects of haze from images are studied in this paper. The main contributions are as follows:1. Imaging polarimeter is constructed to get polarimetric images. The polarimetric images acquired in different scene are analyzed, and get the conclusion that polarimetric information has important value in improving camouflage and cheat objects detection ability.2. There are much complementary and redundancy information among the polarimetric images. According to the character of parameter I, degree of polarization(DoP) and the angle of polarization(AoP), a wavelet based polarimetric images fusion method is proposed to enhance the contrast and definition of the images. A RGB false color based polarimetric images fusion method is given to make object detection more easy. And a DoP modulation based image fusion method is proposed to utilize the difference of DoP images among different material. Through simulation, the better contrast and definition of the image are gotten.3. One of the causes of image degradation is atmospheric scattering. An approach to easily remove the effects of haze from passively acquired images is presented. It is based on the fact that usually the natural illuminating light scattered by atmospheric particles is partially polarized.4. Spectropolarization Imaging and Analysis System (SIAS) is designed and implemented, and class libraries of polarimetric images obtaining, fusion algorithm and objective evaluation are provided.
