With the development of science and technology,as well as the increasingly demand of people living in the image, image fusion technique is used more frequently, the technology is widely used in national defense, medical, infrared, target detection, machine vision and other fields. At present, wavelet transform is the most commonly used in the field of image fusion, but some very important unique characteristics of the data itself cannot be fully displayed in the application, and it can only capture the horizontal, vertical, diagonal direction,it can only play the limited information, cannot play the use of the image’s geometry regularity as much as possible.In recent years as the image orientation requirements continue to increase, the researchers proposed some transformation methods based on Ridgelet, Curvelet and Contourlet, these transformations have a flexible direction selectivity, and the anisotropic.These unique properties make them be capably of of various image transform in the direction of demand.Based on the Contourlet transformation method, the wavelet based on Contourlet transform image fusion method is proposed.Because wavelet transform and DFB methods are not redundant, and the image of the geometric structure effect is obvious in capturing, so is very popular in the present. However, the method using the scalar wavelet can’t set orthogonality and symmetry.But the vector wavelet can simultaneously satisfy the requirements, this paper presents a method based on the discrete vector wavelet method of Contourlet image fusion. Proved by experiments, the method has a good effect at the image edge details.This paper introduces several kinds of commonly used image fusion methods and fusion effect and evaluation index, and then introduces the basic concepts of wavelet discrete vector.Then introduces the Laplasse Pyramid image fusion method, the Contourlet image fusion method and the Contourlet image fusion method based on wavelet transform. Finally, introduces the based on the discrete vector wavelet Contourlet image fusion methods, steps and the algorithm flowchart, then through experiments, tells the advantages of the method at subjective and objective.
