With the practice and development of software engineering, researchers have paid more and more attention to the metamodelling technology. In traditional OO modeling practice, a model is the most important software artefact to connect domain specialists and system modelers. However, in metamodelling, the metamodel is the most important software artefact. Developers construct a metamodel in M2 layer of MOF four layer architecture first, then construct the models in M1 lever according to this metamodel. Metamodelling methodology has good vision in the development of large scale enterprise software system, domain specific modeling and model driven applicaitons.Based on the study of modeling and metamodeling theory, this thesis compares and analyzes the existing modeling methods and the status of metamodelling, provides a useful and practical metamodelling method based on the MOF model. Then the thesis presents a metamodelling environment based on the MOF model, and analyzes the basic structure, main components and the operations of the system.In order to improve the openness of the system and the ability of interaction with other systems, the thesis uses the XMI specification as the standard of the core model repository. To meet the actual demands of using XMI to store and exchange model information, this thesis has designed a simple XMI engine. It has been proved that an openned metamodelling environment can be realized, and it has a lot of merits, such as good openness, extensibility, platform independence, etc.
