The research about embedded Linux is in full swing, and got a rapid progress in recent years. This thesis, firstly, analyzes the syncretism of the embbed OS and Linux. Among the inconsistencies, one of the most impotant problems is to shrink the system image to fit the embedded memory capacity. But the solutions to the problem are limmited for the present. The main reason is that it's absent a standard setting module and efficient reduction tools. This thesis thoroughly analyzes the structure of Linux, discusses and figured out how to build a netfilter firewall base on embedded Linux. The minmized Linux is estableished by analyzing the functions to shrink the superabundance of data. This firewall is an object in the reduction research.Successionally, after compares Linux desktop system with embedded system module, three key portions are found in Linux reduction: filesystem, memory arrangement and LIB. It provides theoretics sustains for farther research.Afterwards based on the existence of reduction mode, contraposes the characteristic of embedded system, this thesis fulfilles the innovative tasks hereinafter: Adopt the method of retrospecting to confirm the filesystem factors by stating the distributing of file volimes and quantities. In allusion to the limitation of that the filesystem image is too big, an incomplete strategy is adopted to uncompress the data into RamDisk. The analytical method of function calls is optimized. Break the back of LIB reduction by analyzing the call relationship amonge programs and functions. Finally this thesis summarizes the research work of embedded Linux's conformation and reduction. Several important issues need to be researched at next stage have been put forward in this dissertation.
