Workflow technology is one of the new technologies that have developed most rapidly during recent years. Its main characteristic is that it can automatize the cooperating process of human and computer, making people and all the application tools cooperate to complete a task together. Workflow technology is the key technology that realize the business process modeling, business process emulation, business process optimization, business process management and integration, thereby realize the business process automation. As the supporting software of workflow technology, workflow management system can support the efficient execution and monitor the executing procedure. With the development of workflow technology, the research on the design and implementation of workflow management system is widely regarded seriously.This thesis introduce the present status of workflow technology, and probe into the cardinal methods of the construction of workflow management systems and their shortcoming. Because there isn' t an efficient conversion method between workflow process definition and instantiation, the implementation of workflow system is difficult, and the decentralization is high. Based on the software component and the workflow patterns which describe controlling features of the flow, this thesis bring forward a workflow model based on workflow patterns and gives a method, in which workflow patterns are mapped to workflow pattern components firstly, and then construct the workflow management system based on pattern components.In the research of approach, Firstly, bring forward the formalized definition of workflow patterns that describe the controlling feature of flow, and define three different kinds of workflow patterns. Then define the workflow pattern components, and introduce three different types of workflow pattern components. Afterwards, expand the traditional Petri netwhich is used in workflow process definition , and bring forward the expanded Petri net model to be used as the descriptive language of workflow process definition. And then define WPBW model, which is based on workflow patterns, bring forward the fundamentals and methods of transforming the expanded Petri net model into WPBW model. Last introduce the architecture of the workflow management system based on workflow pattern components.In the design and realization, Firstly, realize the core component of ten kinds of workflow pattern components—control logic components. Based on the expanded Petri net model brought out in the research of approach, realize the workflow modeling tool which is based on the expanded Petri net, used in process definition. At last according to the theory of component base, construct the workflow component base to store components, in order to search the components in the component base according to the modeling information.After the introduction of the construction method and the implementation technique, a construction example of a simple workflow system is brought forward to verify the method. Finally, according to analyzing the method, generalize its merits and shortcomings, and then discuss what to improve on.
