Optical fiber communication system is developing to the wide-bandwidth,high-capacity direction. As the most widely used method in the backbone optical fiber communication, dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology has made remarkable progress. The appearance of new low-loss transfer fiber and optical amplifier makes the system turn from the traditional loss-limited system into the dispersion-limited system with the increase of the transferring bit rate, the dispersion toleration of the system decreases rapidly. So making the dispersion compensation and optimizing configuration is necessary to the high-speed DWDM system. The hotspots of DWDM and the significance of dispersion compensation are introduced. The chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effect are analyzed. The important factors, such as first dispersion, dispersion slope, XPM, FWM, are researched Optimizing the key parameter of optical fiber system and designed DWDM according to the research of simulation of dispersion compensation is the main work in this paper. Based on the split-step Fourier method, the impact of different scheme of dispersion compensation on the DWDM system is researched using the software PTDS. In the single segment 40Gb/s×16 DWDM, the performance of it is the best on condition that the input optical power , R, Cr, length of SMF, pulse duty cycle is 8-14dBm, 0.99. 0.1, 80-120km, 0.15, respectively. However, the spacing distance of optical amplifiers and pulse duty cycle is 95-130km, 0.25 respectively. A 1000km 40Gb/s×16 DWDM system has been designed taking the noise of optical amplifier into account. The result of simulation shows that the number of optical amplifier should be 10 or 11to get the best performance. In the last chapter, all work in this paper is summarized. The conclusion of this paper is helpful to design long-distance DWDM system with high bit rates.
