With the development of the information technology, the requirements of multimedia information services become higher and higher. People have not been satisfied with accepting the multimedia information passively and wish to interact with multimedia which is somebody interested. Video compression algorithm of the first generation can't meet the requirement. Therefore, the second generation MPEG-4 standard comes into existence, which is based on the objects. MPEG-4 makes full use of human visual system, and seizes the essence of the image information transmission. MPEG-4 adopts content-based coding technology and supports the interactive function based on the visual content. Owing to the advanced coding ideas, effective compression efficiency, low bandwidth requirements, high quality of reconstructed image, MPEG-4 would still be the mainstream video compression standard for a sustained period in the future.On a deep analysis of MPEG-4 shape motion estimation, a fast motion estimation algorithm for MPEG-4 shape coding is proposed by combining the features of binary shape information and the relativity between neighbor blocks. The experiment results show that the proposed algorithm can speed the process of the shape motion estimation and keep the fine quality of reconstructed image. After researching on the algorithm of the resolution conversion for shape coding in MPEG-4 verification model. A modified resolution conversion algorithm based on the characteristic of the resolution conversion at the different error allowed threshold is proposed. At last the work of this paper is summarized and advanced study on shape coding are present.
