Nowadays remote sensing, which has deeply affected the social sustainable development and the economic increasing mode, has gradually began to emerge as an important factor influencing the national economy, social life style and the security of the whole state. The development and application of relative techniques have also been regarded as one of the significant standards judging the advancement of a country. GIS can help us in many fields such as the exploration of natural resources, remote detecting, environmental protection and so on. Indeed the integration of GIS and RS is the most necessary and also we should not neglect the fact: these technologies complement each other. Motivated by this, many experts and researchers have devoted all their efforts to this area.Remote sensing is an important method for data acquiring and updating, and on the other hand GIS is also very useful in remote sensing analysis such as data processing, semantic and non-semantic information extraction. The integration mainly meets these purposes: the combined processing of graphics and images, synthetic analysis, dynamic remote detecting and updating of geographical environment, global change and environment measuring, control of the battlefields.Based on some problems encountering in the integration of RS and GIS, the paper first discussed the principles of information about geography and remote sensing, and then built two models in relation to geographical information and remote sensing information respectively. After that, the integration methods were discussed and therefore a functional model of the integration was built. Later on, the unified data structure of the vector and the grid based on independent variate was achieved in the integrated environment of RS and GIS, also a combined index about the B+ tree and the Quadtree was constructed. At last, a simple prototype of integration system of RS and GIS was developed.
