Since the beginning of 21st century, computer-networking technologies have been greatlydeveloped and available information in the network grows rapidly, so does the geographicinformation. These information used for different application systems have been stored indifferent databases, and data management systems are also quite different. Remote sensingtechnologies have also developed speedily in the past few years, resulting in accumulation ofa huge amount of remote sensing data, including image data and related metadata. Beingstored in discs and tapes these data are waiting for data consumers. While RS technologyapplication is increasingly deepening and computer networking is quickly developing, thedamands for RS data become especially stronger and RS data sharing within a wide area bycomputer networking is urgently needed. Hence, it is of vital importance to carry outresearches on web service based RS data services on demand and corresponding technologiesin storage, management, indexing and organization of data.The purpose of this paper is to study the RS data web services and related subjects of datastorage and data management. Based on an ananlysis of the present situation anddevelopment trend of storage and management of raster data and web service technology, amanagement and service system architecture for Remote Sensing raster data based on webservice technologies was developed, the implementation methodologies of the key technologyof the system were explored and a prototype of the system was illustrated.The main achievements of this paper are as follows:A Remote Sensing raster data management and service system was developed andpreliminarily established by using GML framework and on the base of web servicetechnologies, in which the organization and management of raster data can be realized.Researches were done on how to integrate data from the distributed, multi-structured andautonomic databases while maintaining these data's integrality and consistence with theirapplication systems. Based on the system architecture a prototype has been developed andimplemented to show how the raster data using methods are treated as web services andpublished as uniform web services via the UDDI center for users.
