Virtual surgery is a comprehensive subject; it involves medical science, computer graphics, biomechanics, mechanical dynamics, material science and so on. The primary goal of virtual surgery is to construct a virtual surgical environment and virtual human organs in computer using visualization technology based on the original medical images, and simulate interactive surgical procedures. Virtual surgery is used for surgery training, studying and planning. The virtual surgery system can be divided into many modules, such as geometry modeling, physical modeling, computational modeling, cutting simulation, collision detection and so on. Of all the above, geometry modeling is the basis for all the others. The goal of geometry modeling is to construct virtual models for human organs based on medical images and provide suitable data for succeeding computational modules. In this thesis several 3D reconstruction methods such as MC, MT, Delaunay tetrahedron and Layer tetrahedron are first introduced and their advantages and disadvantages are compared. Then an improved method of Layer tetrahedron: Auxiliary contour method is described in detail and experimental results are given. Next MT method is used and experimental results are also given. In the end realistic 3D rendering using OpenGL lighting, material and texture mapping functions is briefly discussed.
