Nowadays, the scale of the Internet enlarges rapidly, and the demand for network width has been scaling up to an unbelievable degree. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology is used widely. With IP as the dominant traffic in the network, the traditional layered network architecture is no longer adapted to the development of the Internet. IP over WDM is considered as a promising solution for the next generation Internet. Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is a focus in research to realize the IP over WDM. This paper illustrates the principle of OBS, network architectures and module functions, as well as a detailed analysis of the key technologies in OBS such as burst head packet (BHP) management scheme, schedule scheme of data channel, resource reservation mechanism, solution for data channel competition. Based on the existing researches, the paper proposes a new solution for resource competition in OBS network core nodes. This paper gives a simulation platform using OPNET, and designs the schedule scheme proposed in this paper and several existed scheme and switch structures. The paper simulated the performances of OBS network with different system parameters. This design achieves well network performances. Chapter one introduces background of optical network, main task of the project. Chapter two points out the principle of OBS, network node structure includes core node and edge node. The base structure of the core node is introduced, as well as the functions and realization of the main modules. Chapter three introduces BHP management scheme, summarizes several schedule schemes of data channel. Resource reservation mechanism and solution of data channel competition are introduced detailed. Chapter four proposes and analyses the new resource schedule scheme of OBS network core node including used switch structure, schedule scheme, FDLs (Fiber delay lines) structure and modeling of optical switch.
